Home with girls

Just the 8 of us

Just the 8 of us

It’s been less than a week since I got home with the girls, but I think they’re starting to settle in.  They loved decorating their rooms.  It’s a huge adjustment for them to live in a family and we’re trying to understand some of the feelings they’re dealing with.  They’re signed up to start school on Monday, and I think it will be good for them to have a schedule and work to do.  Sadly I’m leaving today to go back to work so it was hard to say goodbye.  I’m sitting here at LAX thinking of all the hugs and tears we’ve shared this week.  Last night I gave them a bicycle lesson and they didn’t want to stop, even after it was getting dark.  They had been looking forward to that for a long time.  Miranda is turning 13 so we threw a little birthday bash.  She couldn’t stop grinning all night.  I can’t wait to get back home.

Finally all together

Finally all together

We finally made it home on Saturday night!  It was a long day, but worth it all!  It’s so fun to be home and have the whole family together.  The girls did great on the trip and and are already settling in to our home.  They even went to church with us this morning and endured a bunch of hugs.  I want to thank everyone who prayed for the success of this project.  I know we will have hurdles ahead of us, but we have seen miracles and we’re off to a great start.  The girls have been decorating their rooms and helping around the house.  Melissa even noticed that someone made our bed for us.  They have sweet appreciative attitudes and are a joy to have in our home.  This week we will make some decisions about their schooling and try to get started on a routine.

The test is good!!!!

Kharasho, pashli! (okay, let’s go!)  We got the clinic results and the TB test turned out negative!  A big “thank you” to everybody who was praying for us!  I had a scare when our translator called me and said that the test result was bad.  She meant it was “negative”.  We went straight from the clinic to the embassy and got the visas.  Their system was working today.  We now have passports with visas in hand!  What a miracle.

We are planning to catch the 5:30am flight from Kiev tomorrow.  After a couple of plane changes and about 24 hours of traveling we will arrive at Ontario, CA.  Touchdown is scheduled at 7:10 pm.  We are all excited on this end!  I can’t wait to see the whole family together!

We just got a message from the embassy that the visa computer is working today!  That’s good news.  I hope it keeps working.  In one hour we will have the results of Jessica’s tests.

We spent a couple of hours this morning at the US embassy.  Since we can’t get Jessica’s visa yet I thought we could at least get the other two.  Unfortunately, they are having problems this week with their network connection with Washington.  It’s only been working intermittently the last few days.  Today it was down, so they couldn’t print any visas.  We’re hoping it works tomorrow!  IF Jessica gets a good test result tomorrow, and IF the embassy can print visas, we will be able to make our Saturday flight.  It would be great to make it home on Valentines’ day!

“No Papa, let me wash the dishes!”  I can’t remember the boys ever saying that.  Melissa’s going to love these kids.  They’re pretty easy most of the time, although there are moments…. No man should be required to keep three girls all happy at the same time.

Surviving in Kiev

Now that we’re going to be in Kiev for a few days we are setting up a little routine.  Jessica has to go to the clinic early each morning for her tests.  I spent a couple of hours today filling out the remaining forms for the US visas.  I try to work on some English with the girls for a while each day.  We’re staying in a furnished apartment that our facilitator arranged for us.  There’s a grocery store about a 10 minute walk away.  I’ve had to teach them a few things that we normally take for granted, like what food goes in the freezer and what goes in the fridge, and how to open a milk carton.  They’ve also taught me some things.  Did you know you can drink the juice from a pickle jar?
